Mike Tyson vs Kevin McBride Odds Vary among Online Bookmakers: Public Relies on Luck of the Irish
Even the Irish bookmakers have McBride listed as a huge dog, but the public hope the luck of the Irish is on his side.
Miami Beach, FL (PRWEB) June 10, 2005 -- Mike Tyson may be a huge favorite in
this Saturday's marquee bout, but that doesn't mean he will win. With Kevin
McBride close to a +600 dog across the board, there is tremendous value here.
Then again, when we enter into the online bookmaker's realm of +600, this is
about the equivalent of finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. It's not
likely.
Mike Tyson's instability and questions about his conditioning
make this less of a "sure thing" than one might otherwise believe.
His
name alone used to strike fear into a fighter's heart. Now Mike Tyson is a pale
shadow of the young sensation who surged through the heavyweight division like a
raging inferno, writes David Kelly, a columnist for the Belfast
Telegraph.
McKnight was born in Ireland so one would expect the Irish
press to write favorably about him, while dismissing Tyson's value. Josh Hansen
of Covers.com, brings up a valid point, however. Tyson is not worth the
risk.
Hansen states that the public supports this notion, reporting that
at least one sportsbook, Olympic Sports, has thus far taken action almost
exclusively on McBride.
But McBride is far from heavyweight fighter
material and thus the public must rely heavily on Tyson falling apart and a
lucky leprechaun in McBride's corner to translate a live dog into easy
money.
When Mike Tyson is in the picture, anything is a
possibility.
Most people are not going to risk $800 to win $100 on Tyson.
At the same time, this fight probably won't attract a large audience of sports
bettors since most people don't think it conceivable that McBride can beat
Tyson.
The Irish bookmakers don't appear to have much faith in their
native son either.
www.betmaker.com, which is based out of Costa Rica but owned
partially by an Irishman, features McBride at +575. Some will throw $100,
realizing a profit potential of $575.
Ireland sanctioned www.matchbook.com, which
allows bettors the ability to go up against one another - thus eliminating the
bookmaker - featured best odds of +600 on its native McBride. Matchbook is
slated to join the Sports911.com family this month.
Another Irish-owned
bookmaker and the trifecta in a group represented on Sports911.com, www.sportsinteraction.com, lists McBride at 5.50 on their
decimal odds system. SIA traditionally offers more appetizing underdog
lines.
Then there is what many might consider "The Mother of Irish
Bookmakers" - www.paddypower.com. It lists McBride with 13/2 odds, meaning
for every $2 wagered, the profit potential is $13. Paddy Power's line is about
the same as Sports Interaction.
And while betting outright on either
fighter may be ruled out, there are other more realistic odds that should appeal
to sports bettors.
Sports Interaction features a line of 101.00 on
whether the fight ends in ends in a disqualification due to a bite. That might
not be so realistic... but it could happen... again.
Many punters will be
wagering on the number of rounds. Betmaker.com features a line of over 3 1/2
rounds at +165, suggesting not only will Tyson win but the fight itself won't
even be worth watching.
Don't write off McBride too quickly. These
staggering odds against him are nothing compared to the likes of a Giacomo
winning the Kentucky Derby with 50-1 odds. In fact, May can be referred to as
"The Month of the Big Long Shot". During this past month we have seen huge long
shots win in everything from the races to boxing to the heavily wagered on
American Idol.
And if McBride is to win with a $200 bet, that is a $1000
plus windfall. It might be worth a shot.
