For That Impossible-To-Buy-For Person This Season
Paul J. Barker’s immensely appealing debut novel, Timothy’s Take-Out, might just be the answer. It is a paean to those who don’t quite fit in, to those who might have been more comfortable in a simpler time and place...
(PRWEB) November 22, 2004 -- Carl Fellows is some piece of work. Barely
twenty years old, he’s already sworn off women and college! After drifting
aimlessly for awhile, the shy young man takes a job he couldn’t be less suited
for – that of restaurant “personnel” manager – and things only go downhill from
there.
Working conditions at Timothy’s Take-Out prove nothing short of
atrocious. There’s no heat, no air conditioning, no reliable equipment, and no
reliable employees. The customers are obnoxious beyond comprehension. The only
good thing about the restaurant is its proximity to one of the most beautiful
beaches on earth.
Not that Carl has much time for recreation, working
60-or-more hours a week...
The young man’s personal life is about as
messed up. If he’s not suffering emotional abuse at the hands of some girl, he’s
getting the stuffing kicked out of him by neighborhood tough guys. His few
“friends” are either fickle or mentally deranged. Though he sweats blood for his
weekly paycheck, he never seems to have any money.
His indomitable spirit
keeps him going, and almost makes him a likable character. Unfortunately, his
constant striving for perfection serves mostly to highlight his incredible
selfishness and intolerance. While his ideals might be admirable, his lifestyle
seems almost reprehensible to some.
Paul J. Barker’s extraordinary first
novel is being touted as, among other things, “the perfect gift for
malcontents.” If there is just no pleasing that certain someone on your gift
list, could this be what you – and they – are waiting for? Although Timothy’s
Take-Out is available at most online bookstores, the easiest way to order a copy
is through Mr. Barker’s website, at www.dontlikemyjob.com.
