Happiness Author to June Grads: Don't Let Them Sell You a Bill of Goods
Author believes graduates are being pushed into jobs that will make them miserable.
Buckingham, PA (PRWEB) June 9, 2005 -- Author and happiness expert, Jim
Donovan, has a message for June grads, "Don't let them sell you a bill of
goods."
Donovan's wants the recent graduates, about to enter the adult
world, to "Believe in themselves, follow their heart and live their dreams."
"Too many well meaning adults are telling these kids to go into a career
field that pays well, but not emphasizing that, to achieve lifelong success, it
is more important that they follow their passion," says Donovan, the author of
Handbook to a Happier Life (New World Library)
He cites studies,
including one by Srully Blotnick, which followed the progress of 1,500 people.
Of the total, 1,245 in Group A chose to pursue a career based on earning ability
while the 255 in Group B pursued their passion. Twenty years later, of the 101
millionaires in the study, only one was from Group A- the group who went for the
money.
"It's pretty simple," Donovan explains, "If you're doing
something you love, something you have a passion for, you will feel good and be
happy doing it. You'll be in harmony with your heart's desires. As a result, you
will undoubtedly do it well which will, in turn, enable you to be more
successful than if you were simply chasing a paycheck. Besides, you will be
happier doing it."
Too may people, according to Donovan, readily buy into
a belief that "You can't make money doing what you love," when, actually, quite
the opposite is true.
"Look at the world around you," he suggests,
"People are succeeding in all types of careers. The Internet alone has made it
possible for people to become successful, even wealthy, in ventures that were
virtually impossible a few short years ago.
And the opportunities in
Self-employment and International business are greater than ever before in the
history of the world.
Donovan offers some simple tips to help identify
your passion:
- What are the things you are naturally good at doing?
-
What are the things that come easily to you?
- What do you do in your free
time?
- If you knew you would not fail, what would you attempt?
- What
would you do even if you did not get paid for it?
- What do your friends and
family say you'd be great at doing?
- What type of work is it that, just
thinking about it, gets you excited?
If you do this, you may even become
one of those fortunate few who, like Bruce Springstein, have been able to say,
"I'm having so much fun, I can't believe I get paid to do this."
Donovan
suggests the new grads adopt his core philosophy, "Within you is the power to
change your life." And he encourages them to take charge of their destinies and
create the life they were born to live."
