Montclair Kimberley Academy Enlists Broadway Actress and Published Poet to Teach Summer Camp Workshops
Broadway actress, Colleen Hawks, and published poet, Marianne Burke, join school’s Talent Explosions summer camp, offering students an invaluable learning experience
Montclair, NJ (PREWB) June 2, 2005 -- Montclair Kimberley Academy (MKA), one
of New Jersey’s leading private schools, has announced the addition of two
accomplished professionals in the fields of theater and writing to its Talent
Explosions summer camp program. The camp is open to current MKA students and
area residents seeking art, athletic, and academic enrichment
experiences.
“We are thrilled to have these two incredibly accomplished
women join our summer program staff,” said Brian Kelly, Program Director, MKA
Talent Explosions. “It’s always exciting for students to mentor under teachers
who have real-world experience to share. Ms. Hawks and Ms. Burke will inspire
and motivate our summer camp participants interested in learning more about
theater and creative writing.
Ms. Hawks and Ms. Burke will teach camp
participants in MKA’s Talent Explosions, a unique day camp experience designed
to meet the interests of every young person, entering grades 1-12. The program
helps young artists, athletes and academicians develop their skills and broaden
their life experiences. It also provides a warm and nurturing environment for
young people who simply wish to branch out and try new things, such as fencing,
sculpture, or journalism.
Ms. Hawks has significant experience in
theater, with roles in Broadway’s Smokey Joe’s Café and the Boy from Oz with
Hugh Jackman. Hawks is credited with dancing and acting roles in television and
film, including Law and Order: Criminal Intent, The Guru, and Frank and Nancy.
Ms. Hawk’s workshop will consist of acting, voice and dance lessons, with each
two-week session culminating in a student performance.
Marianne Burke is
an English teacher at MKA’s Upper School. Ms. Burke is an accomplished poet with
works in publications including the New Yorker, Threepenny Review, and Southern
Poetry Review. In addition, Ms. Burke has been anthologized in a literature
textbook published by St. Martin’s Press. Ms. Burke will mentor students in a
creative writing workshop where she will encourage students to hone their
writing skills.
Talent Explosions enables students to choose from a wide
variety of classes and mix offerings from the arts, athletics and academics.
Additionally, Talent Explosions works in conjunction with the respected
Montclair Kimberley Academy Summer Academic Program, so that a wide range of
academic courses (offered for credit and non-credit) are available to all
students in grades 6-12 in MKA’s air-conditioned middle school classrooms.
Courses and workshops are divided into three categories:
- Arts offerings include workshops in theater, performing arts,
photography and multimedia production, as well as classes in ceramics,
sculpture, cartooning, rocketry, and jewelry making.
- Athletics offerings
include swimming, tennis, fencing, basketball, lacrosse, and a soccer clinic led
by MKA's varsity soccer coach, Mark Shearer.
- The Enrichment portion of
MKA’s program offers opportunities in math, science, English, journalism,
creative writing, Spanish and French. In addition, students can take a Princeton
Review course aimed at improving their test scores.
Talent Explosions
runs three two-week sessions from June 27th through August 5th, with the choice
between full day and half day activities. For more information on Talent
Explosions please contact Laura Gerard, Registrar, or Brian Kelly, Program
