Primary Research Group releases a new study: Creating the Digital Academic Library (ISBN# 1-57440-071-1.
(PRWEB) August 26, 2004 -- The study examines the digital library production
centers at Cornell University, Indiana University, the University of Washington,
the University of Michigan, the University of Pennsylvania System of Higher
Education and the University of North Carolina. In addition, it examines the
digital collection development policies at libraries sponsored by Columbia
University, Duke, the University of Texas, and other universities.
The
study finds that academic library digital library centers are aggressively
seeking ways to become better integrated within the library, and more self
supporting by generating revenue from ventures outside the library. Currently,
most of these efforts center around leasing software or services to other
libraries.
The mission of the academic library digital library center
varies enormously from institution to institution, with some focusing on content
development, and others focusing on information technologies to manipulate
content or library processes.
Digital library production centers seem to
gain the most support when they are well integrated with information technology
services within the library and the general university community.
Some in
the digital library production centers believe that academic libraries
themselves can foster open access publishing by using the infrastructure
developed by academic digital libraries.
