New Jersey Nets Kill Abdur-Rahim trade
The odds of New Jersey winning the Eastern Conference Championship now look grim as bookmakers remove future payout odds for the NBA Conferences.
Miami Beach, Florida, (PRWEB) August 10, 2005 -- Shareef Abdur-Rahim may be
viewed as damaged goods by the New Jersey Nets organization but online
bookmakers believe he is still a formidable player who will help any team he
joins.
The New Jersey Nets on Tuesday rescinded their trade with the
Portland Trail Blazers for forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim and acquired forward Marc
Jackson from Philadelphia.
The Abdur-Rahim trade was put on hold last
week after the nine-year veteran failed a physical. The Nets didn't disclose the
nature of the medical problem, but team president Rod Thorn said it was
something neither Abdur-Rahim nor the Trail Blazers knew about.
``Obviously we weren't aware of it, and after all the conversations back
and forth, I don't think the player was aware there was any problem,'' Thorn
said. ``He hadn't missed any games regarding this. To my knowledge, (Portland)
wasn't aware of it.''
Abdur-Rahim is now a free agent and other teams
will be interested. This could be what has prompted most online bookmakers to
remove NBA Eastern Conference Championship future odds from their slate. At
press time, Gambling911.com could not find any NBA Conference Title future
odds.
"The key now is to try and figure out which team Abdur-Rahim will
land on and whether it is enough of a push to make his new team a leading
contender during the 2005-2006 NBA season," commented Christopher Costigan,
Founder and President of www.gambling911.com. "He's now a major free agent on the
market who until today provided the Nets with a glimmer of hope for another
championship."
www.vipsports.com was one of the few online sportsbooks at
press time listing NBA Championship odds only, with New Jersey a 30 to 1
favorite to win the title. Even these odds are somewhat risky considering there
were many experts who believed the Nets could end up in yet another NBA Finals
after a two year absence.
As for Marc Jackson, the 6-10 Jackson averaged
12.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in 81 games for Philadelphia last season. Selected
after his junior season at Temple University by the Golden State Warriors in the
second round (38th overall) of the 1997 NBA Draft, Jackson has played for three
teams during his NBA career (Golden State-00-02, Minnesota-02-03,
Philadelphia-03-05). He has posted career marks of 9.0 points and 4.7 rebounds
in 267 games.
