Ohio Ski Area to Launch More Than a Season
Snow Trails Ski Area, OH has the bragging rights to numerous firsts. Including a new unique contest called 'Design a Park'. From Dec 04 to Feb 05 skiers and snowboarders can develop their own designs for the next Snow Trails terrain park. The Grand Prize is a Signature Park for the 2005/06 ski season.
Mansfield, OH (PRWEB) December 11, 2004 -- With opening day looming for
skiing, one ski area is already generating excitement. Starting in December and
continuing until February 19, 2005, skiers and snowboarders will get the chance
to design a signature terrain park at Snow Trails Winter Resort near
Mansfield.
Snow Trails has the bragging rights to numerous “firsts” they
have accomplished since being the first to open in Ohio in 1961. This Design a
Park Contest is no exception. Snow Trails management believes this is the first
time any ski area has done something of this nature and scope. In this unique
contest, skiers and snowboarders and all snow enthusiasts are encouraged to
develop their own designs for the next Snow Trails terrain park. The Grand Prize
winner will see his/her designs come to life on the slopes during the 2005/06
ski season.
Dave Carto, President of Snow Trails had this to say about
the contest, “Because terrain parks are becoming such an integral part to ski
area operations, we are constantly searching for bigger and better features to
keep our guests excited. Many of the best suggestions for the jumps, rails, and
other features come right from those who use them the most. Our goal is to both
validate the best ideas and reward those that develop them; plus, have some fun
along the way.”
The contest was conceived in a meeting over the summer
while going over plans for the upcoming ski season. Resort management realized
that both local and visiting terrain park enthusiasts were always willing to
help give feature suggestions for the park. After compiling all the suggestions,
design ideas, and even construction offers they decided to find a way to
encourage even more. The Design a Park Contest was born.
The Design a
Park Contest also coincides with the launch of the new Snow Trails website. With
terrain park enthusiast demographics that lean heavily towards the web, the www.snowtrails.com
site will be used as the back-drop to showcase many new interactive
capabilities. Both contestants and regular snow enthusiasts can be active
participants at Snow Trails this winter whether they are on the snow or on a
computer. Snow Trails will post regular contest updates, photo diaries, daily
ski conditions, and more throughout the winter.
One grand prize winner
will be announced in February that will receive, in addition to other prizes,
their very own bragging rights to a ski area “signature” terrain park. The
designer’s challenge is to bring together numerous hard and soft features while
taking into account the terrain layout, the types of materials used, the size
and scope of the features to the available space, the flow of someone coming
downhill, the ease of the features construction, the amount of snowmaking
needed, as well as cost considerations. A big challenge for a big
reward!
For those with lesser aspirations, there will also be monthly
winners for the top individual features. Monthly individual feature winners will
be chosen in two single-feature categories, a hard division and a soft division.
The hard division winner must come up with an original and easy to build feature
that uses some form of hard materials.
Examples of hard features
include:
• “wall” something that resembles a wall in
appearance, function, or construction.
• “rail” a
structure made of bars and/or supports that extends horizontally between
supports.
• “box” a hard sided container typically
constructed with four sides perpendicular to the base and often having a lid or
cover
Soft division feature examples include:
• “jumps”,
“hits” a snow structure or course from which a jump is
made.
• “tables” a raised usually square or rectangular
surface with a horizontally cut surface across the snow
structure.
• “spines” a snow structure that resembles or
suggests a spine, backbone or ridge.
The Design a Park Contest will be
run completely through www.snowtrails.com, including contest information,
registration, and judging results. For more details on how to enter, official
rules, or monthly winners visit www.snowtrails.com.
