Summary: the best
Comment: why oh why is this not on dvd. It is one of the best movies from the 30's and 40' there is. Lional Berrymore is so good in this. Everyone wants a grandfather that loves them this much. When the dvd comes out I truly want one. Everyone needs to see this movie.

Summary: An all time classic
Comment: Hard to add to the fine reviews here. As was said, given the quality of the story and acting, this should easily be a well known classic like It's a Wonderful Life, but somehow it has slipped though the cracks of cinema's history. Not even on DVD? How can that be?? What a terrible shame. Lionel Barrymore turns in an outstanding performance. The premise of trapping death up in a tree although rather simplistic, turns into a storyline that makes for an outstanding 5 star movie one can watch over and over throughout one's lifetime and always appreciate it. Hopefully we'll see it come to DVD soon so folks who have yet to enjoy it will have a chance to do so and at a resonable price, the VHS is just getting too expensive.

Summary: Great Movie for the Whole Family
Comment: I first saw this movie about 15 years ago. I was in Blockbuster and was looking for a good old movie. I loved it. Now I am looking for it to show my wife and kids. It's not on DVD which is a shame because most people don't use vhs anymore and will not ever watch this movie. I think its as good if not better than Its a Wonderful Life. It is very sad but is also heartwarming and unforgetable. I would consider getting a vhs just so you can watch this movie with your family. There are so many good old family movies to discover from the 1930's 40's and 50's that are way better than the so called family movies being made today. Do some research and discover some gems that you and your family will love for years to come.

Summary: Timeless and beautiful
Comment: This is pure story-telling at the very best. When the plot draws you in as wholly as this movie did, the entire movie crew has done something rare and magical. If only current Hollywood could recapture the innocence of this movie...

The phrase "they don't make them like this anymore" is not overly sentimental about this movie. It's almost 70 years old, yet just as fresh and charming today as it must have been in 1939.

I could go on and on, but can only say that if you don't find your heart breaking at the end, you are inhuman.
