Customer Rating: Summary: Enjoying winter Comment: This is my first winter living "out in the country," and it seemed like a good year to get out in the fresh air. I set my heart on snowshoes for Christmas and my husband agreed that I should choose them myself.
I needed something good for a beginner, light and easy to maneuver, not too expensive, and not requiring special boots. Oh, and easy to get on and off; I have bad childhood memories of being "trapped" in the old bearpaw wooden snowshoes.
My choice was these Yukon Charlie's Backcountry 825's. Today I took them for their first outing on the local snowmobile track and I'm completely thrilled with them. They're incredibly light, yet the aluminum frames feel sturdy, and the crampons gave great stability on hills without dragging or sticking in any way.
The most amazing thing about these snowshoes is the bindings. It took a bit of fiddling to get the straps adjusted to fit, but once that's done they're on and off in a flash with the Big Dog clips -- one on the heel strap and one across the instep. Amazingly stable on the foot, no slipping at all, and they shed the snow well. The binding's very flexible on the base but firmly enough mounted to make maneuvering simple, and it took me no time at all to get into a relaxed stride.
We went along a lightly groomed snowmobile trail and it felt so good that we struck across a field to look for deer and wild turkeys. Breaking a trail in two feet of snow was more challenging of course, but these 825's did great.
If your winters are snowy and you have any interest in getting out for some quiet exercise, I recommend snowshoeing and in particular these wonderful Yukon Charlie's Backcountry 825's. Have fun!
