Summary: Bang for the Buzz
Comment: I was in need of a scanner for my laptop, as the interface with my HP7XXX series all-in-one sucked as far as scanning went. After much review reading here and at Newegg, I decided that for the cost the LiDE90 was probably what I was looking for.

My only real need was to scan B&W documents for work. To this the LiDE90 has performed well, with one caveat. It is, as many reviewers have noted, a noisy little bugger. Maybe noisy is unfair. How about buzzy? The carriage movement is on the loud side, meaning that in general it doesn't bother me but I would be hesitant to use it with someone sleeping in the room. So if you are planning to use this in stealth mode forget it, but other than that you should be fine. Color scans range in the 2mg size, greyscale 80kb.

Overall it does the job at a good price. I will report back when it gives up the ghost, (as all things must).

Summary: Works well with Vista
Comment: Purchased this scanner since previous HP scanner was not compatible with Vista at all. This scanner was a huge improvement. The scan quality is good and it doesn't take up much space on my desk as well.

Summary: Totally disappointed ... but it might be my misfortune with Cannon
Comment: I got the device. I scanned 6 pictures. That's all.
Just a week after, I tried to use the scanner. The mechanism jammed at midway, making this "particular noise" I know, the noise that let you know that device simply screwed up.
I believe I did not handle the scanner inappropriately. I'm used to handle and keep all my e-devices with, -sometimes going extreme-, care. I unlocked the device as supposed to. The rest of the procedure to use the scanner is not big deal -is very convenient, by the way-.
Now. I'm hesitating in proceeding with the warranty claim. Why? I like to spend no more for nothing. Earlier, years ago I purchased a Cannon digital camera. The camera spoiled as well -the mechanism to close the lens got clogged in between and stop responding-. I sent it for warranty, but I NEVER EVER OBTAINED A RESPONSE FROM CANNON, despite several phone calls and e-mails I made. One more: before this LIDE 90, I had a Cannon scanner as well -I can't recall model number, I guess it was the "1200" or so-. I loved the way this scanner worked ... unfortunately ... it became broken ... same failure as today with this LIDE 90 ...
Conclusion.- I would not like to ran and rave about Cannon. Is not my personal style. I just want to recommend: thing twice about when getting something from Cannon.

Summary: Canon flatbed scanner
Comment: I'm a bit disappointed by this sleek scanner. It's advantage is that it is thin/light and doesn't require a power brick - it is powered by the USB connection. The quality of scans are good. Control thu the TWAIN interface (if you can access that) is good. It accepts pages up to 8-1/2 X 12.

The disadvantages are as follows:
(1) The polyglot of software that comes with it does not result in a plug&play product. I haven't gotten the 4 automatic buttons on the scanner to work well yet. The pop-up window doesn't point to where I want to go. I can access the TWAIN interface thru my paint program, but not thru Canon's software. My wife doesn't like that.
(2) It is much slower than expected, especially at high resolutions.
(3) The new scanner arrived at my house with the lock-for-shipping switch in the unlock position. This model is so lightweight it probably doesn't need one, but I do wonder what is happening in the QC department of the factory.

Canon has discontinued this model for a new one, which, unfortunately, I couldn't wait for. Other than being almost small enought to be portable, I'm afraid I can't recommend this Canon LiDE90 over a bulky HP or Epson box.

Summary: I love this scanner!
Comment: This product is a great scanner at a great price! The only complaint that I have is that I had to wait over the weekend to get it :-) Really though, my wife and I scanned in over 25 pictures in a hour and that included touching them up in the software that was provided with the scanner.

Mentioning the software, I will say that it is a little cumbersome to use, but heck for $80 what do you expect. Heck spend a little more and get photo-shop or something like that and you will be able to scan into it as well, or just capture in the software provided and then switch into photo-shop and complete the touch-up.

Forgot to mention: This was all ran on XP not Mac some of the reviews for mac say the software sucks, but heck Mac comes with great photo software, so use I would use that instead. It is TWAIN compliant so it should work with any software that is twain compliant. However the buttons at the front, such as the photo button, may not work as you would like in other software. However, I do not know for sure as I was able to do what I needed with the software provided.

Also, the USB power feature is nice; consequently, I did not have to worry about losing a power pack "AKA: wall wart" or worse yet plugging in the wrong one and frying the scanner! That is why I had to buy a new one!

Editorial Reviews:

Looking for simple, high-quality scanning in one super-sleek machine? Four easy buttons automate the entire process, so it's a snap to scan, copy and create e-mail attachments or PDFs. Your results will be impressive, with color dpi resolution of up to 2400 x 4800. The Advanced Z-Lid lets you produce clear, complete scans even of thick originals such as notebooks. Built-in retouching technology can further enhance your final images with automatic corrections for dust and scratches, fading, graininess and backlighting. And to reduce the number of wires in your work area, one simple cable provides power and a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection.
