Yes, if you are a coach or PE teacher (or just like to use a whistle in your classes) this is THE WHISTLE!
It's easy to use, allow multiple tasks (calling for someone or giving directions or cheering or modifying calls, etc), has 3 different tones so you can program a work with a specific move for each tone or a stop-go-jump (i.e.) according to each one (the button for the change of tones is very easy to switch).
Also and obvious but nonetheless very very important: HYGIENIC! Not even thinking about sharing the old regular whistle with someone else (unless you're thinking on Angelina... or perhaps Bratt for the ladies...), but let's imagine you have the flu... Where do you think all of your virus and evil germs are going to end up (don't forget the phlegm) when you whistle??? Yep, right into that tiny little obscure and humid space called whistle. And when you're healthy again, are you going to put your lips right there!?!...
After being a little bit explicit, let's continue with the review... It has an ADJUSTABLE LANYARD that's just the right size for keeping the whistle at reach of your hand without having to deal with lanyard knots for excessive length.
The LOUDNESS.... ok, here's where you have to use your imagination: in a close environment (regular high-school basketball gym) it can be heard from end to end easily (no crowd included). On open environments like a soccer or football field with stands on sides it will be heard all around the field not so easily, but heard! Just fine for a coaching need. (again no crowd included). Not tested yet for swimming coaching but I think it'll be heard if your pupils aren't to deep in water. (BTW, if you're coaching 20-30 noisy kids, it'll do the job for calling to attention)
Now, if you put it right next to your ear.... you'll probably lose a little bit of your hearing capacity... and hear a little buzzing for a while (Watch out if you lend it to one of your kids, that's the first thing they're going to do on someone else's ear, some even on their own.. amazing...) So conclusion: it's very loud but it won't reach the higher loudness of a regular whistle blown with anger.
I almost forgot, if you are wondering if it has a volume button or similar... nop, manual though! Just put one finger on the top part of the whistle and there you go! Manual Volume Regulation!! How many space you left open of the hole will determinate a higher volume. (no, you won't hurt your fingers and I don't think it could damage the whistle, I've done it many times, still ten fingers, still a working whistle)
The MATERIALS: well mostly it's made of hard plastic and the black grips (I think) from some sort of hard silicon (rubber like). Feels good to touch and easy to hold, with a very sweaty hand (really heavy sweaty hand or really wet for those thinking to use it on swimming coaching) it may slipper just a little (here comes handy that ADJUSTABLE lanyard). The shape it's hand-ergonomic-like.
I've drop mine a few times (not on purpose right) and it just got a little bit scratched on a side, nothing that indicates it could break in pieces if it's dropped. I might say that the finish isn't the best, but for the price and the functionality it works! Conclusion: good materials, doesn't seem to be easy to break (try not to jump on it of course!)
The SIZE: it's about 4 x 1 x 1 inches. (1x1 wide part)

CONS:
-NOT TOO LOUD (not loud enough to use it for refereeing on open environments, though it will work on closed ones)
-NOT A FINE FINISH (just for those who like all your stuff with a shining look)
-THE STICKY WHISTLE BUTTON (if you press it too hard the button may sometimes get stuck down till you press it again... could be a little bit annoying, but it's nothing you can learn to do kindly)
-THE PRICE (I leave it last because it's kind of relative, since you can buy a regular whistle for $1, why to spend so much on this non "important" item for coaching?... well... because you can make it really a part of your training or coaching situations and most important your HEALTH, so for me, it's worth every penny!!!)
PD. I've owned it for about 3 months and I use it every day for around 5-6 hours/day.
