Summary: The Best Jazziest Christmas Music Ever!
Comment: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones have come together with a wonderful Christmas CD in the form of Jingle all the Way.
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are making some of the most innovative and refreshing music these days, and it really shows in this Christmas CD.

Bela plays the banjo, Victor Wooten on bass guitar, Future Man on percussion, and Jeff Coffin on sax and woodwinds and strange vocals. The last one does make some really strange vocal noises that I've heard in recent years; he doesn't sing, he nasally and throatfully performs, and strangely appropriate at times(Jingle Bells and Jingle Bells are examples).

My absolute favorite tunes on this CD are the remake of Vince Guaraldi's "Linus and Lucy", "Silent Night", "Sleigh Ride", and "Bela's Banjo Solo Christmas".
These wonderful renditions of classic Christmas songs in pure instrumental form are wonderful to listen to.

So, have a Bela Fleck Christmas!

Summary: nice job
Comment: Decent Bela release, a long time coming. A little of the throat singing goes a long long way though. Linus & Lucy a highlight. Worth adding to existing Bela collection.

Summary: Not for me, unfortunately
Comment: One of my favorite CDs of all time is Bela's Perpetual Motion. Unfortunately, that is the only time I have honestly enjoyed his work.

I am not jazz-insider enough to appreciate the nuances on this CD. I'm sure it is probably brilliant and progressive, but most of the time to me it is just a lot of noise. The Tuvan throat singing is clever for the first 30 seconds, but my God, it goes on forever and just ended up annoying me.

The two Charlie Brown songs are pleasant enough. I was very intrigued by River, since Bela plays the banjo and the piano at the same time, but it really sounds like...he is playing the banjo and the piano at the same time. Really, they look like great guys and clearly had fun making this music. Unfortunately, I didn't have nearly as much fun listening to it. A disappointment.

Comment: This is the liveliest holiday music I've heard. Great arrangements with interesting new sounds! The musicians really let loose with their creativity and had a great time doing it.

Editorial Reviews:

Béla Fleck, often considered the premiere banjo player in the world, has made a name for himself as a virtuoso instrumentalist unbounded by genre. His band The Flecktones - Victor Wooten on electric bass, Jeff Coffin on sax and flute, and Future Man on percussion - are equally talented and adventurous as Fleck himself, and together they have made a string of critically acclaimed albums that combine bluegrass, jazz, funk and world music with technical prowess, unlimited imagination and occasional zaniness. Their new holiday CD Jingle All the Way is all of that, with bells on - Christmas music as it's never been heard it before, with unique tonal textures (banjo, Tuvan throat singing, klezmer mandolin), hot solos and tight ensemble arrangements that make every measure new. Jingle All the Way is the perfect stocking stuffer for those who like their Christmas music fun and challenging at the same time.
